The 25th Annual PEI Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival will be held July 2, 3 and 4, 2010 at the Festival Grounds in Rollo Bay. With many US, Eastern Canadian and Island bands putting out over 30 hours of great music on our main stage, The Buzz Music Workshops where artists share their skills with budding musicians, Bluegrass songwriters’ circle, the ever popular Open Mic on Wednesday and Thursday night preceding the main stage events, new talent showcases, children’s program, and more concessions this year’s event promises to be the biggest and brightest Festival yet.

Over 500 recreational vehicles are expected to attend from all over Eastern Canada and the US to hear great bands and enjoy our genuine island hospitality. This year’s main stage event will feature special guests Ralph Stanley II from Virginia, Tennessee's Barry Scoot & Second Wind, and the very popular Midnight Ramblers from West Virginia. A native Virginian from Coburn, Ralph II is the son of Ralph and Jimmi Stanley. Ralph II is an accomplished songwriter, having penned many of the songs that are included on his albums. In August 2000, Ralph II was married to Kristi Ison of Pikeville, Kentucky. The couple currently resides in Coburn, Virginia with their daughter Taylor Brooke and son Ralph Edmond Stanley III. As one might expect for the son of a renowned banjo player, the first instrument Ralph II ever held was a banjo. At the ripe old age of three, Ralph, (or simply Two as he is called by his fellow bandmates in the Clinch Mountain Boys), had his first lesson from the elder Stanley, learning a simple finger roll. It turned out, however, that he would not be following in his father's footsteps when it came to choice of instrument. He soon fell under the spell of the undisputed king of boyhood musical desires, the guitar. He spotted one under his sister's bed, and, according to Ralph, "I wanted to play that. When I was five years old, I started with the guitar, and I've been with the guitar ever since." But despite his interest in the guitar, and the fact that he was occasionally travelling with the Clinch Mountain Boys on the road, he had not yet developed an ambition to play professionally. It took until age 12, and an old 1970's video of the late Keith Whitley during his tenure as lead singer for the Clinch Mountain Boys, to inspire him to become a professional musician. After seeing Whitley he was hooked and spent hours in the basement honing his skills, and weathering the comparisons to his late Uncle Carter. His persistence paid off, and he took the stage as lead singer with Ralph Sr. and the Clinch Mountain Boys in June of 1995. Since then, he has earned the respect of Stanley fans everywhere, and has garnered praise as a strong new artist in his own right.

Barry Scott was born in 1967 in Ellijay, Georgia. Barry grew up in a very musical family. His dad played in several local country bands that opened for Grand Ole Opry stars Porter Wagoner and Buck Owens. He started singing gospel music when he and Barry's mother, Audrey, met. When Barry's sister Brenda was old enough, she played piano, Dad guitar and Dad’s sister Catherine Crump sang harmony with them forming the Scott Family band. Barry started making the transition from traditional Southern Gospel to Bluegrass when he joined fellow Gilmer County native, Barry Abernathy in the gospel Bluegrass band he founded, Silvercreek. Barry Abernathy, James Jones and Barry sang together about three years, until Barry Abernathy left to join IIlyrd Tyme Out. After Silvercreek disbanded, Barry rejoined The Perry’s to sing lead and play bass.

Barry was with The Perry’s about three and half years. In the meantime, Barry Abernathy had joined Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. In November 1996, Barry joined Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver to sing lead and play guitar. After nine years with the band, he felt the Lord was leading me in a new direction in my musical career. On December 31, 2005 I left DL&Q. Barry now have his own band, Barry Scott and Second Wind.

The Midnight Ramblers got its humble beginning approximately three years ago and has since added accomplishment after accomplishments.  Austin Boggs, the founding member, started by playing on a local radio show in Southwest Virginia. The band has constantly expanded its horizons into the eastern and mid-west part of the United States and in 2009 toured the United Kingdom. No matter how big or small the show and how far they roam from home, the Ramblers always give their all to each and every show. Through their enthusiasm, hard work, God-given talent, and awesome stage presence that belies their youth, the Midnight Ramblers have a true ability to captivate audiences everywhere they go. The young group's combination of outstanding music and vocal skills leaves audiences with long-lasting memories that provides promise of a prosperous future.

Their latest CD was produced by Tim Stafford from the band Blue Highway,  came out on Lonesome Records  and was recorded at Maggard Studio in Big Stone Gap, VA.  Art Menius said "Inside the gorgeous packaging the band members immediately prove that they have been focused on playing and practicing. They possess a youthful devotion to rhythm, married to a respect for the music, especially its vocal traditions."

A stellar lineup of Eastern Canadian Bluegrass artists is also featured this year including The Spinney Brothers ( http://www.spinneybrothers.com/ ) from Nova Scotia, a very popular and talented band versed in traditional and contemporary Bluegrass and gospel music as well as the ever popular Bluegrass Diamonds (www.bluegrassdiamonds.com) and PEI's own ECMA and Music PEI award winners, The Grass Mountain Hobos ( http://grassmountainhobos.com/ )
