The 26th Annual PEI Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival will be held July 1,2,and 3, 2011 at the Festival Grounds in Rollo Bay, PEI, Canada. With many US, Eastern Canadian and Island bands putting out over 30 hours of great music on our main stage, The Buzz Music Workshops where artists share their skills with budding musicians, Bluegrass songwriter's circle, the ever popular Open Mic on Wednesday and Thursday night preceding the main stage events, new talent showcases, children's program, and more concessions this year's event promises to be the biggest and brightest Festival yet.
Over 500 recreational vehicles are expected to attend from all over Eastern Canada and the US to hear great bands and enjoy our genuine island hospitality.
This year's festival features Joe Mullins and The Radio Ramblers from Ohio, Jerry Butler and The Blue J's from Tennessee and Larry Gillis and His Hard Drivin' Swampgrass Band from Georgia.
Joe Mullins and The Radio Ramblers have become one of the most sought after Bluegrass acts in the Midwest. The band formed in 2006 for the primary purpose of performing at Classic Country Radio promotions. They now are to playing more national shows.
Joe Mullins, banjo player and vocalist, currently resides in the Cedarville, Ohio area. He has been an active Bluegrass performer and radio broadcaster for 25 years. He began working on the radio and playing banjo professionally while still in high school in the early 1980's, touring and recording nationwide as a founding member of the band the Traditional Grass. Mullins also performed and recorded with the awarding winning Bluegrass band, Longview.
Adam McIntosh of Lebanon, Ohio, is the guitarist and a vocalist with the Radio Ramblers. He began playing Bluegrass at age 11. In 1999, Adam assembled a local band, Borderline, where he met mandolin player, Mike Terry. The next year, Adam began playing guitar and singing tenor with Rounder recording artists, Dry Branch Fire Squad, where he remained for 3 ½ years.
Fiddler, Evan McGregor, of Brookville, Ohio, has been playing Bluegrass since 1994 and been a member of a number of regional and national acts since his career started, including the Wildwood Valley Boys, the Aubrey Holt Show, and the James King Band. He's also placed in several regional fiddle contests. While playing local venues as a member of different regional bands, Evan had become acquainted with Mike Terry and Adam McIntosh.
Mandolin player, Mike Terry, of Jamestown, Ohio, has been involved with Bluegrass music most of his life and performing with local Bluegrass groups for 12 years. Mike first met Joe Mullins when they performed together in the gospel group, the Beacons.
Bassist, Tim Kidd, of Morrow, Ohio, began performing Bluegrass as a young teenager. At 17, Tim began playing Southern Gospel with the Hoskins Family, where he remained for 1½ years until moving to the Beacons at age 19. It is with the Beacons that Tim first became acquainted with Joe Mullins and Mike Terry, and where he performed for nearly 5 years. Tim has also known Adam McIntosh since his junior year of high school.
Jerry Butler & The Blu-J's are bluegrass festival favorites. Their repertoire consists of original and traditional bluegrass songs, familiar classic country songs and heartfelt gospel. Fans will enjoy the energy, fresh sound and entertaining show this group brings to the stage. "We just want the folks in attendance to have a good time with us, laugh, cry, sing along, whatever they're feeling at the time. When we're done we want them to be able to say 'now that was fun'."
Jerry Butler began playing and singing bluegrass music at the age of twelve 12. His first band The Knoxville Newgrass Boys, included classmate (bluegrass virtuoso) Phil Leadbetter on dobro. As child musicians they performed at high schools and at the top bluegrass festivals and country music shows in the south. They also performed at the White House in Washington, DC during the Nation's Bicentennial. Jerry solidified his bluegrass resume singing lead with Lynwood Lunsford & the Misty Valley Boys and The Joes Isaacs Band. To quote Ms. Dixie Hall, "Without a doubt, Jerry is among the most unacknowledged singers in the business. He has lent his flawless and peerless vocals to Pine Mountain Railroad and held the featured lead singer position in Carolina Road."
Jerry was the featured lead vocalist on the single BEYOND THE RAIN by Pine Mountain Railroad, which won Front Porch Singing News Bluegrass Gospel Song of the Year at the National Quartet Convention in 2008. Jerry has an Associate of Music Degree from Cumberland College, Lebanon, TN. He is married to Tami Butler, the couple resides in Knoxville, TN with their daughter. During the summer months, when not on the road, you may find Jerry in Pigeon Forge, TN with The Blue Valley Boys where he spent several years at The Ernest Tubb Record Store.
Bobby Clark joins the Blu-J's from the popular midwest bluegrass group Williams and Clark Expedition. An award winning and veteran musician, Bobby has performed with Vince Gill, Larry McNeely, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, The Bluegrass Cardinals and 16 years with Mike Snider. Bobby's awards include The Winfield Kansas National Mandolin Championship, The Buck White Mandolin International Mandolin Championship, Kerrville, TX and the World Mandolin Championship in Des Moines, IA.
Jack Hicks - Banjo player/fiddler Jack Hicks brings many years of bluegrass and country music to the blue j's and is a welcome addition to the group.
Blake Bowen - Blake is the newest blue j and is a very solid and tasteful bass player.
Larry Gillis and His Hard Drivin' Swampgrass Band, have a long history in Bluegrass and Acoustic Music. Larry and his brother John travelled extensively through the US and Canada as The Gillis Brothers for many years until John's retirement several year's ago. Larry has carried on the Gillis Brothers legacy with his own unique style of bluegrass music with encompasses the mountain sounds of The Stanleys with a heapin' helpin' of "SWAMP".
Larry Gillis - Larry Gillis comes from a little town called Soperton, located in southeast Georgia. One half of the legendary Gillis Brothers, Larry continues with his music career in bluegrass. A world renowned banjo picker, and one of the few who still plays the old claw hammer style. He definitely has a traditional style of his own. 2010 marks thirty years in the business for Larry and truly justifies the title "Dr. Swampgrass Gillis".
Alex Leach - Alex is from the Knoxville, Tennessee area, and has studied the Gillis Brothers sound since he was nine years old. He has been a DJ on the radio since he was eight and now has his own bluegrass show once a week. At twenty-one years old, he plays lead guitar and sings lead vocals with a talent like no other.
Rafe Waters has always loved traditional bluegrass and gospel music. With a desire to be a part of this music, taught himself to play the doghouse bass while working as a paramedic. He was born and raised in Glennville, Georgia and now resides in Statesboro.
Ryan Gillis - Ryan is Larry's adopted son. He started learning the guitar at the age of 14. With Dr. Gillis as his teacher, no wonder it only took him a year and a half to become part of the band. He makes us proud. Just turning sixteen, he is home schooling, loves music, riding his four wheeler, and scary movies.
Ella Niaman - Ella comes from central California and is 23 years old. She has always loved the Gillis Brothers and wanted to play traditional bluegrass music. She fits right in with the boys and brightens up the show with her smile and enthusiasm. It shows in her fiddle playing too. Curly Ray style fiddling earned her the nickname Ella Ray.
A stellar lineup of Eastern Canadian Bluegrass artists is also featured this year including the return of (A New Shade Of Blue) from Nova Scotia, a very popular and talented band versed in traditional and contemporary Bluegrass and gospel music as well as the ever popular (Bluegrass Diamonds) (www.bluegrassdiamonds.com), Bluegrass Tradition, and The Mark Boutillier Bluegrass Band
The Buzz Workshops will be held in the shelter building featuring up-close and personal discussions, tips and learning opportunities on all Bluegrass music instruments and vocals. Peter Richards of The Buzz is a proud sponsor of this event.
